Industrial Utility Efficiency

Inaugural 2018 Best Practices EXPO & Conference Announced

Best Practices Expo

Improving plant profitability by optimizing chiller and cooling systems is a major focus of the just-announced inaugural 2018 Best Practices EXPO & Conference, to be held at the Chicago O’Hare Crowne Plaza Conference Center, September 17-19, 2018. Chiller & Cooling Best Practices® Magazine Publisher Rod Smith said, “Identical to our publications, the mission of this event is to help plants increase their profitability by optimizing their industrial utilities. It’s a proven fact cooling, compressed air, blower and vacuum systems offer plants low-hanging fruit to increase productivity and profitability!”

The 3-day four-track conference will bring leading experts from the chiller and cooling system industry together with cooling system users at manufacturing plants. Michael Jones, Corporate Energy Team Leader, Intertape Polymer Group said,  “We have 10 plants and chilled water represents 20% of our total energy bill. One of our plants, for example, has a capacity of 5,000 tons of cooling managed by over 15 chillers.”

A typical horsepower split in a cooling system is chillers (710 hp), cooling towers (81 hp) and pumps (80 hp).  Actions in one area can significantly impact the other. Rich Whitmore, CEO of Motivair Corporation said, “The brewery saw savings, over mechanical cooling, of 85% when using a 100% free-cooling chiller during the coldest months.”

Cooling systems also have a significant impact on water use in a factory. Kimberly Clark’s 100 plants have a $700 million energy spend. They’ve recently announced energy intensity (kW per unit manufactured) and water intensity (gallons of water per unit manufactured) reduction goals of 30% and 20% respectively by the year 2020. Attendees will learn how to begin a similar journey, one which Kimberly Clark began in 1995.

The EXPO floor will feature approximately 60 booths displaying the technologies needed to optimize cooling, compressed air, blower and vacuum systems. Smith said, “We’d like to thank MTA Corporation and CTA Chillers as the first chiller exhibitors to sign up!”
