Mitsubishi Electric Launches MECH-iC Chiller Platform

09/16/2026

Mitsubishi Electric Power Products (MEPPI), together with Mitsubishi Electric Hydronics & IT Cooling Systems (MEHITS), launched the MECH-iC, a magnetic-bearing, air-cooled chiller platform designed to support the next generation of U.S. hyperscale and colocation data centers. Available in 350-ton (1.2 MW) and 500-ton (1.75 MW) nominal capacity models, MECH-iC delivers higher cooling capacity in a footprint approximately 25% smaller than comparable systems and supports ambient operation up to 125ºF (52ºC).

The rapid growth of artificial intelligence, accelerating computing and cloud infrastructure is increasing pressure on data center operators to expand capacity while managing power, water and space constraints. As compute densities rise, cooling performance has become a critical factor in improving usable IT capacity, maintaining resiliency and supporting long-term sustainability goals. MECH-iC was developed to help address these challenges through compact design, high-efficiency operation and reliable performance for modern hybrid cooling environments.

“We are excited to strengthen the Mitsubishi Electric critical cooling offering for the U.S. data center market,” said Marco Bettiol, Group IT Cooling Product Marketing Manager, MEHITS. “MECH-iC was developed specifically for the operational realities of modern data centers and AI factories, where power and water efficiency, footprint and reliability are increasingly critical. It also aligns with Mitsubishi Electric’s holistic approach to sustainability by optimizing energy performance and advancing key metrics such as PUE and WUE.”

Optimized for 65-75ºF (18-24ºC) supply water temperatures, MECH-iC uses oil-free, magnetic-bearing refrigerant compressors to enhance efficiency and reliability while reducing maintenance requirements. Mitsubishi Electric’s patented R.E.D. Cooler technology, developed by its subsidiary MEHITS, improves thermodynamic performance, while fast restart capability enables system recovery in under three minutes after power interruptions. Using R-515B refrigerant, MECH-iC balances efficiency, sustainability and safety while maintaining a non-flammable A1 safety classification.

“Adding MECH-iC to MEPPI’s data center portfolio enables us to solve a broader set of customer challenges,” said John Campion, Vice President and General Manager of Critical Power Solutions, MEPPI. “Now we can connect critical cooling with power protection, energy storage, software and services to help customers build more resilient, efficient and scalable infrastructure through a more integrated approach.”
